Free Zone Company Formation in UAE
Free Zone Business Support in the UAE
There are around 40 Free Zones operating in the UAE, with more under development. Each Free Zone is governed by its respective Free Zone Authority (FZA) and is designed around one or more commercial categories. They only grant Operating Permits to companies that fall within these commercial activities.
The main attractions of Free Zone establishments are that there are no foreign ownership restrictions, and companies are governed by an independent Free Zone Authority. This Authority issues Operating Permits and regulates the activities of companies within its jurisdiction. Importantly, Free Zone companies are not subject to the UAE Commercial Companies Law.
It is a common misconception that a Free Zone company is the same as an Offshore company. While there are some similarities, they also have very different requirements and characteristics.
UAE Free Zone Residence Options
Most Free Zone Authorities in the UAE typically provide between one and six residency options (commonly referred to as Residence Visas) per company – not including family members of the main visa holder. These options cover owners, directors, and employees.
The number of available residencies depends on the specific Free Zone, the size of the office space leased, and sometimes the nature of the business activity.
Free Zone residency permits are usually valid for three years and can be renewed without limitation. In addition to enabling shareholders, directors, and employees to reside in the UAE, Free Zones also provide a wide range of business advantages:
-
100% foreign ownership (no local partner/sponsor required)
-
Full repatriation of capital and profits
-
Corporate and personal income tax exemptions

No currency restrictions
-
Wide variety of business activities permitted
-
Affordable utilities and abundant energy supply

-
